Mochilas Kogi – Kogi bags from Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada in Colombia, the heart of the world.
Home to four indigenous communities: Arhuaco, Kogi, Wiwi and Kankuamo.

I visited the Kogui community Uldezhaxa.

In Kogi (Kagava) culture, weaving plays a crucial role. Weaving just like weaving thoughts.
Women weave the bags, men weave the clothing.

One of their traditional bags are the Fique cactus bags.
The men harvest and clean the fiber, and the women weave the bags.

Creation takes approximately 1-2 months.
1 day to remove the Fique fibers, let dry for a week, then braid the strands. Then 1 month weaving.
(2 months including preparation).

Approximately 10 Fique leaves are necessary for one bag.

The colours are natural plant colours, and depending on your family lineage you wear one colour or another.
Men always wear two bags, one for their poporo.

I brought back with me five bags, please write if interested.
